Via Motors Shows Its 800 Horsepower, 100 MPGe XTRUX Pickup: Live Photos

Motor Authority -- When it comes to range-extended electric vehicles, the concept of delivering fuel economy up to 100 miles per gallon equivalent isn’t all that foreign; after all, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt delivers 98 MPGe.

What the Volt and other range-extended electric vehicles fail to deliver is 800-plus horsepower and a full-size pickup truck body. Enter the Via Motors XTRUX, conceived by Via Motors under the guidance (and marketing prowess) of its chairman, industry veteran Bob Lutz.

Loosely based on a 2013 Chevy Silverado, the XTRUX plug-in hybrid drivetrain combines a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a 5.3-liter Chevy V-8 to power a range-extending generator. Dual electric motors, each producing 402 horsepower, provide “more than sufficient” thrust.

Could be 100 mpg, could be 50? we're not really sure yet? Don't know if or when it will be available for purchase, don't have any idea what the price will be? Nice pictures though. Good journalism.

But there is no way it is going to get 100MPGe used as a truck; used as a commuter car, perhaps. And those numbers probably apply to the version with the single, 400hp electric motor, since the company didn't specify that the claim applied to the 800HP version, meaning the headline is misleading at best, if not an outright lie. Poor journalism.

Its good they are trying things out to see if it will work, but when it does, make it affordable.
