The Worst Small SUV Money Pits

U.S. NEWS & World Report -- To hear the media tell it, everyone wanted a hulking, gas-guzzling Cadillac Escalade before the recession hit. Now, humbled, we all want a tiny, fuel-sipping Nissan Versa. Neither picture is quite true.

As many car-shopping Americans have discovered, the right solution for many of us splits the difference – a compact SUV. Today’s small sport ‘utes are marvels. Most are built on the same platforms as small or midsize cars, making them as easy to drive as sedans – and just as fuel-efficient. The average fuel economy in the Affordable Compact SUV class is about 21 mpg in the city and almost 27 mpg on the highway – similar to wha

Very strange article that implies all small SUVs will be covered, but only mentions eight! Much like Consumer Reports with blinders on. The info on the Honda CR-V is so far off, it is absurd. They suggest one can find the overpriced Honda for sale in the low to mid $20k range with a 5 year Total Cost of Ownership at about $30,000. Most Honda dealers will not sell their CR-Vs for less that $30,000 and they are all loaded with options, add-ons, and dealer mark-ups.

I don't want a small SUV I want a big one. The hell with the gas mileage.

I'd be happy if there were more choices like my Passat wagon - which has more rear seat room and more cargo space than many 2 row full size SUV's, and handles, brakes, and gets the mileage of a sports sedan. But clearly, I must be a minority, because VW is pretty much the only choice for a fun-to-drive wagon anymore - or any wagon at all. Instead, we have multiple small/compact SUVs with much less passenger and storage space, lower mileage, and whose main fun-to-drive credit is that they handle better than a full size SUV.

Bad link!

What we used to call hatchbacks and station wagons are now SUVs? Well, they're better than jeeps.

No matter, SUVs, small or large, are top heavy and unstable. I see them in ditches all the time in bad weather....
