Elect motors do not use antifreeze. Why not just mandate them?

Animal advocates keep whining about it. Personally, if the cost is minimal and it is done by the industry rather than by heavy-handed regulation, I don't see any great harm in doing it.

About time, but maybe an added smell would be better since one lick to taste the deterent bitter taste might have already done the harm

It won't help much because all it usually takes for a small animal like cats is one lick of the antifreeze to kill them. Best preventive is don't leave spills not cleaned up. Most people don't let their dogs run loose because of leash laws for public safety. However, Cats are allowed to run free & bother everyone except the owners. Since they are only a nuisance to others not as much of a public danger, cats don't have a leash law.
Be considerate to others and keep all your animals controlled and they won't be drinking antifreeze anyway. I don't dislike cats, I just dislike others imposing on my rights. I hate cleaning up after other peoples' animals, dog or cats. So if you walk your dog, pick up your own dog waste or bury it. Most people don't want to hear the cats fighting & making noise outside their window at 2am either.

voyagerkim asked, ". . .and how much is this going to cost us?"
Antifreeze cost $1.25 per gallon in the '70s ... until video tape became a household staple when VHS took over the market. The tape is made from the ingredient in antifreeze. Today, the gallon of antifreeze costs $13-15, BUT video tape is not the hot commodity it was in the past. We have become accustomed to paying 10+ times as much for our antifreeze - like our gasoline, and manufacturers realize they don't have to lower the price.

The word used was "unpalatable" but the similar meaning word "unappetizing" works, but WHY change the word?
Copy and paste is the way to go.
Why is the source listed as My Edmonds News .com? The article linked is the DVM on-line publication, veterinarynews.dvm360.com.
Maybe squirrels will drink the sweet stuff and they can be cleaned out of the chase. We keep our dogs away from areas where antifreeze is kept. Used antifreeze is flushed.
Artificial color in foods is an even greater problem for people.

It is a good idea whose time has come. Antifreeze has a sweet taste that kills dogs and other animals attracted to it. It is the right thing to do and they also should keep the cost of the change next to nothing.

now ethanol straight up is a diffy story-then again, we don't put ethanol straight up in our car either, unless it's in gallon jugs, for transporting ;)

Believe it or not, there are those who will actually put antifreeze (or similar things) in the water for stray cats & dogs. Methinks they ought to be made to drink that concoction themselves.
