Long-Range EV Has Motors in its Wheels

Design News -- Japanese prototype electric vehicle (EV) with motors in its wheels has an extended driving range 30 percent longer than other mass-produced EVs, due in part to engineering plastics.

The SIM-WIL EV from SIM-Drive Corp. of Kawasaki City, Japan, contains almost 50 new technologies from several companies, including DuPont Performance Polymers. SIM-Drive says a unique in-wheel motor system and extensive use of lightweight materials, including high-performance polymers, allow the car to travel 218 miles on a single charge.

In-wheel motors have been around for awhile. But auto executives can't think outside the box.

Lightweight and Strong materials for the body and other components, Long Range and High Mileage vehicle. Motors at the wheels to put te power where it is needed, no connecting rods or linkage needed. An EV with a reasonable cost, a battery for high mileage and distance, a quick battery recharging time and a decent battery replacement cost. ALL of those auto batteries will be REUSED or RECYCLED, they will not be thrown away into a land fill OR placed in storage and piled up! Some people have NO clue!
I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else.
My current vehicle was paid for many years ago and it works just fine! Why have another car payment in 'coming out of the closet' Barry's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the good paying jobs are Not here. Barry's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continues to be down – no matter how smoooooth talking Barry spins those numbers and he can spin them very well! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

So add a small engine and matching generator to recharge the batteries on the go.

218 miles on a single charge...what if you have to travel more than that? Should we pull a trailer with extra batteries?

Nothing new here, the battery is still the weak link and that is where the advancements need to be made before these 'things' will become mainstream.

Really? 218 miles on one charge?

That would help people who want to go to and from work without having to charge the batteries while at the destination.

–––––––––––––
How can anyone say that this is adapted from the Prius - or any other electric car - just because it happens to have regenerative braking?

Interesting - it sounds as if this technology was actually adopted from the Prius. The front wheels on the Prius hybrids assist in charging the engine's battery.
