"Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest energy sources, if we can handle the radioactive waste disposal problems. "
This is totally a political problem. I've been to Yucca Mountain, and it's the perfect place. Coal plants, on the other hand, spread radioactivity into the air over all of us, and create incredibly much more waste.

Jeff1944: can you explain what you mean? When the law was passed it was very much supported by the people in Germany. And living in Europe before and after Chernobyl, I can tell you, it was very intense. And everyone pretty much preferred for nuclear to go away -- if there had been any alternative.

Sounds like poor legislative decision making based on emotion rather than facts?

This is not good public policy. We need all types of energy now and in the future.

I would be surprised if they don't extend that deadline again, when it gets closer to 2022.

Why not just put a bunch of solar subs around, manned by the military, and put 'em into the grid? Those things last 30 YEARS!

There are so many options open to us.
We must not get caught into one mantra of "Drill, Baby, Drill"
Please, let us all explore the energy that the future can give to everyone.
The options are many if only we keep our minds open.

We have to use everything we have and can develop for at least 20 years by then we might be able to start gaining significantly on having enough more green energy to reduce petroleum dependency.

Nuclear power can be safe when handled properly, but still worry about the waste it produces.

They have the right idea, but then again the Germans don't let their nuke plants be run by the lowest bidder.

Hey, you can't keep burning oil forever; nuclear power will be needed until something better comes along.

The USA can't afford to get rid of nuclear power plants either. Some of ours are now beyond their designed life span, like Vermont's one nuke plant, and are not aging gracefully. Quite a contrast in attitude on nuclear power from Germany to France.

Plant life is whatever you declare it to be. The longer the life the longer the depreciation schedule, in the U S that would mean higher taxes.

Not wise to junk nuclear plants before alternative capacity is built, and sit in the dark.

On this one the Germans are not thinking with their heads. They have just lowered their competitiveness in the world economy. I guess that is good for the US.

If you look at all the available energy sources and the cost to produce each, nuclear is at the top. All others are not even close. If we really want to break our dependence on oil, nuclear would allow it and be cheaper to.

Practice economics not politics. You can't make alternative energy sources affordable or reliable just by Government mandate.

Nearby; the Germans' old French friends have more atomic power plants that save a (metric) tonne of carbon dioxide generation; a nuclear navy and they are proud to be different. Guess the European Union is somewhat like ours.
