Gas Prices In U.S. Are Among Lowest In World, Report Finds

Huffington Post -- Gas prices may feel high in the U.S., but they are much higher in the rest of the world.

We have the 12th lowest gas prices on a list of 55 countries compiled by Bloomberg, cited by blogger Barry Ritholtz. Most other wealthy nations have significantly higher gas prices.

In the U.S., gas prices average $4.19 per gallon, according to Bloomberg. In contrast, gas prices are $5.75 per gallon in Canada, $6.75 per gallon in Australia, $8.84 per gallon in the United Kingdom, and $9.35 per gallon in Italy.

Gas prices are lower in the U.S. to a large extent because the U.S. subsidizes oil production and levies relatively low gas taxes. Other countries tax gas consumption more heavily, according to Bloomberg. Gas prices are highest in Norway at $9.69 per gallon, where ...

Honda
$20/gallon for water? LOL
I pay under $1/gallon for water. 24,16.9 oz. bottles for $2.50, every day.
$2.50/3.16875 gallons = 78.9 cents/gallon.
The small quantity argument doesn't hold either. You can't compare buying a single bottle of water, to filling up your gas tank. The 24-pack of water is a much better comparison, considering the average gas fill-up is 15-18 gallons.

Ya can't just compare a single cost of living element from one country to another, and draw a valid overall conclusion.

considering many Americans buy bottled water (slightly improved tab water) for about $20/gal (when buying in small bottles), it's amazing how some folks here still whine about the price of gasoline. Yet, the same ppl also buy the bottled water w/out blinking or complaining.

Very interesting comparison, gasoline VS milk, gee, I guess if I had nothing to eat for days, I would probably choose the milk, gasoline is not very edible, Maybee I could trade the gasoline for some milk to a needy farmer! Maybee he could make more food if I gave him more gasoline, not a bad trade off, I get to live, and the farmer has gas for his utilities.

What about the countries that directly subsidize gas so it costs around a dollar a gallon?

I could see a small tax increase on our gasoline, but let's not bring it to socialist levels. As long as the tax went to infrastructure or viable alternative energy.

Whether or not U.S. gas prices are the lowest or the highest is a matter of perspective....
How that price impacts a person's budget based on their income and available finances is a whole other matter....
What would seem reasonable to me might be outrageous and unacceptable to you....Or to the Canadian citizen.... Or to the Norwegian...

Interesting points by FightHighGas53.

Gas is much higher in Canada, and the taxes we pay account for most of the difference. I believe the total taxes is over 32% and that was awile ago. Could even be higher now.

Its all physco-babble people! Countries in Europe pay 4 to 5 bucks per gallon in taxes. Here in the US the average tax per gallon is 42 cents, including federal, state and local. Vehicles in Europe weigh 1/3 of what our cars weigh, have smaller engines, and go much faster. Most have little or NO safety features. Also, gasoline is sold by the liter in Europe.

Quit yer bitchin' about the mileage our cars get. You know darn well that 98% of us daily car commuters drive at 75 to 85 MPH, without fail. Your foot, mechanical health, wind resistance, tire pressure, and speed have more to do with mileage than what Detroit kicks out.

Want lower gas prices? Tell the government and big oil to STOP drilling for it just to sell it oversea's. Right now, the US is running out of places to store crude oil. Its always about the MONEY!

Just reelect the anointed one and see how fast he can raise gas taxes so they match his idol Europe. Prez Doofus wants us to be "just like socialist euro boys".

If you like high taxes and even higher spending, please reelect your "hopeless and changeless' stooge.

Baloney! Not so when you consider the great distances most of us must drive, combined with the almost complete lack of dependable and convenient public transit both locally and inter-city/inter-state. Alternatives to autos are almost non-existent.

that's because other countries believe the line of balogny their gov'ments fed them of why their fuel needs to be high priced.while the citizens of their countires did nothing to stop them from raising the price of their oil/fuel/evertything that is associated with oil/fuel cost like food, clothes, shelter, medical, everything that is shipped or transported. this is what happens when you have a corrupt govment in those countries and even here.except here we don't take the balogny they are spreading around about fuel having to go up in price just because of speculation/greedy little money grubbers/corruption.it amazes me those countries have not had open civil war over this garbage.
