There are improvements that need to be made, but every step forward brings us new info at least.

As more people buy an all electric or hybrid for their daily commuter, more batteries will be built and at a cheaper per unit cost.

I think battery efficiency will be more driven by electric cars than just battery usage.

Competition for energy storage for laptop computers, MP3 players, cell phones, and other portable devices will compete for batteries and keep upward pressure on battery prices.

Electrics do not need to replace gasoline engines anytime soon. But the more people who can use them and do then the more gasoline available for those will not.

Until they get a battery that will hold a charge for at least 500 miles, it will not be practical for the average person on a trip outside the city.

Hopefully we will witness giant strides in battery technology in the current decade. We need a more efficent and less costly battery if battery powered vehicles are to make any headway into changing our driving habits.

Everything will hang on ROI RetuRn on Investment. Right now the only thing keeping battery cars on the shelf is a Federal funding.

Batteries will always be a reducing return for storage input for the are chemical and they breakdown based on charge/discharge cycles. This means a basic inefficiency in any battery. look at the "hot swap" technology developed for the Chevy Volt. It acknowledged the need to change out battery cells individually in the battery pack rather than the Honda and Toyota method of making the owner buy a whole new battery pack, equivalent in price to am engine rebuild. Fuel cells are the only alternative to batteries for electricity storage that will work very long term such as the 10 to 15 years of a vehicles life. But so far that is harder to support and more expensive than a bunch of basically toxic batteries.
