Hartlander -- BP, an energy company that won praise from environmental activists after adopting the slogan “Beyond Petroleum” while investing heavily in solar power, is shutting down its 40-year-old solar business after executives decided solar power production is not economically competitive.

Companies like BP are interested in any energy source that financially pencils out. The fact that they are backing out of solar R&D is an indication that solar doesn't "pencil out"--and that's with government subsidies! Get rid of the subsidies and tax credits, solar and most renewables don't stand a chance (at this time) in a free market.

Let the price of oil plummet or get so high that people say "forget about it" then alternatives are more attractive.

Charities and hobbies are the type of endeavors that are not driven by a profit motive. BP is a business. They would not abandon a business unit if they thought it could be profitable.

Between the panels, controllers and batteries they have NEVER paid for themselves. I like them but the grid is cheaper if you have access to it.
