Aberdeen goes solar, aims to soak in savings

Asbury Park Press -- A $2.9 million solar project, which is expected to cut the township government’s annual electric bill by half, will be completed by the end of September.

The township is financing the project, which has placed solar arrays on township buildings through a 15-year, power-purchase agreement.

The township is joining a growing number of homes, businesses and government agencies that are turning to the sun for power. According to the state Clean Energy Program, 17,132 homes and businesses have installed a solar energy program as of July 31, which generated a total of more than 852 megawatts of energy since 2001.

Over the next 15 years, Aberdeen should achieve a savings of approximately $750,000 or more, Harris said.

I've seen a lot of solar companies in California that will do the install, maintenance and all for no upfront cost to you. They own it all, and you get the reduced electric bill. They take the risk, and you share in the reward.

The only way this will pay off for the citizens of Aberdeen is if they are getting most of the money for the project from the state and/or federal governments (and that means that all the rest of us are paying for Aberdeen's electic use)!

If I were a taxpayer, I would be very angry.

But, all my calculations indicate it is not much of a cost effective endeavor right now.
