Saudi state oil company hacked leaving 30k computers damaged

GasBuddy Blog -- The Saudi's got hacked. Big time. According to Saudi Aramco, the state run oil company, a cyber attack against its computers back in August damaged some 30,000 computers. The apparent target was bringing down the country's oil and gas production, halting exports of such products from the largest exporter in the world.

According to Reuters, the attack on Saudi Aramco — which supplies a tenth of the world’s oil — failed to disrupt production, but was one of the most destructive hacker strikes against a single business.

“The main target in this attack was to stop the flow of oil and gas to local and international markets and thank God they were not able to achieve their goals,” Abdullah al-Saadan, Aramco’s vice president for...

IBM punchcard machines, before that we didn't have enough product to worry about moving.

Computers can be perfectly secure. Just don't let them access external networks and verify what comes in is not malware. We had to feed all our code through a firewall machine to make sure it wasn't malware.

Saudi state oil company hacked leaving 30k computers damaged, the value of very good computer virus software when it's really needed. If they can find out where the attack came from, then they can go on from there.

Somehow, I feel this will be tied to increased gas prices in the U.S. since our consumption is down.

I would look at IRAN as Saudi's said they would help supply the oil lost to countries supplied by IRAN with the oil sanctions against IRAN.

We are just now hearing about it here because people here are that far behind the curve. What is not said is that Telvent was hacked. More important since they provide remote dispatch services for about 1/2 of the North American oil transportation system. Saudi we can live without for long enough for the system to be replaced> The US SPR has enough oil to cover 5 months of oil interruption at a rate of 4.4 million barres per day.

Telvent would shut down 1/2 of the pipelines in the US Canada and Mexico. Far more serious.
