Any tax increase is a tough sell. On top of the FICA increase, it's going to be even tougher.

Why is it that most state legislators are always looking for a new way to stick their hands in our pockets? Why can’t they try harder to show that they are responsible managers of our tax money and just start spending what they get on what they have promised?

Increasing any state tax is a "tough sell" especially if you don't have enough reasons or evidence to support the increase. Voters aren't mindless idiots that vote only their pocketbooks although they do watch their finances closely. If a case for increased state taxes is properly made/proven then they'll vote for it.
Oh, by the way, is this the same Iowa demographics that wields so much more influence over national politics? If so, it appears Iowa state politicians have not discovered how to persuade their own voters of the need for state road infrastructure improvements yet these very same voters are smart enough to influence national politics? How is this possible? Oh, I know, Iowa residents will eventually use their national political clout to extract a disproportional amount of national taxes to pay for their state road improvements.
Sorry Iowa. I must be in a bad mood today.

Where is the accountability for the money currently being raised by the existing fuel taxes?

I agree... most states need to improve their infrastructures... BUT, what usually happens is that the pace of re-doing repairs step up for a while, but the quality of the work drops and the tax never goes away. It just gets raised again in a few years claiming there are not enough funds to do the job. We've had at least 3 bumps in our gas tax in Michigan in the last decade or so... and we still have pathetic roads.

I believe that most state gas tax funds are probably misused, as it is in CA and by the federal government.

"dieselme2011 - As long as it is used to fix the roadways there is nothing wrong with it. " You just summarized the problem in a nutshell. I don't think there is any confidence that the money collected from fuel taxes has all been used for road maintenance. There needs to be a full accounting of what has been collected and what it has been used for. I don't think that will happen. Some people would probably go to jail.

Gee, maybe your revenues are going over the border to MO? Is it really the governor, or just the dumb legislature wanting more money to waste?

Well....our illlustrious Gov. who I voted for wants to raise out gas tax and raise the price on vehicle registration after cutting pensions and making a deal w/ Canada to build a new bridge. He won't get my vote the next time around!

While I'd say the roads need it, I'd also advocate them finding a way to do it that actually is cost effective. I've never seen road projects take so long as they do here, and the repairs don't even last a full year before they need to do the same six month project again.

Remove the waste that most politicians feel they have to have and you will have a surplus
