Fewer Americans commuting solo

GasBuddy Blog -- The national average price of gasoline is nearly 25 cents more per gallon than it was a year ago, and the higher cost, coupled with the nation's weak job outlook tells us misery loves company.

And consequently... USA TODAY is now reporting that fewer Americans are commuting solo. According to U.S. Census data, the share of workers driving to work alone dropped slightly from 2010 to 2011 while commutes on public transportation rose nationally and in some of the largest metro areas in the country.

Group commuting --riding buses, trains, subways, or sharing cars or vans-- rose from 2005 to 2011 in more than a third of 342 metro areas for which data was collected, according to USA TODAY's analysis.

some of us have no choice but commute alone (hours vary, need to drive different routes before/after regular work).

Wished I could commute w/ public transportation, but no luck around here.

My wife and I aren't taking two cars into work now; plus, we're saving extra since we don't have to pay for her parking expenses. The parking garage where she used to park tripled their monthly parking rate.

This includes public transportation, not just carpooling.
Wonder how many are taking bus to a lower paying job?

I believe that carpooling members in the same vehicle is inversely proportional to the distance of the commute. The shorter the commute the more folks in the vehicle.

More telecomuting would also result in saving a lot of gas and an employees time.

With all the crying over gas prices I would have expected group commuting long ago. I guess its easier to whine about gas prices than implement a energy savings plan. Excuses are the norm.

Old news. I believe in not commuting solo, but it isn't always possible. When I worked, there wasn't anyone to commute with on my side of town at the hours I worked. I knew former co-workers who transferred to a site out of town who ride-shared. People who can, it's to their benefit.
