Ré your post concerning 1980 gasoline prices: There are different ways of calculating the worth of the dollar in the past (percentage of GDP; how long workers in various categories had to labor to pay for a commodity, etc.) so one might arrive at slightly different figures using different methods, but the inflation-adjusted price of gasoline in 2013 dollars was about $3.44.
I am not a professional mathematician, but I believe that $3.44 not only is not "considerably higher" than gas prices today, it is lower (by about half a buck around here) than in 1980. I also remember sitting in some pretty long gas lines then.
