Enough with the Toyota articles already. Enough with the media hysteria! EVER car manufacturer has had problems, right down to tires. And the media is just as guilty with their hype (exploding gas tanks anyone?)

What about the people that died in Pinto crashes or GM pick up trucks?

TallSteve; I agree in part. I drove a Toyota and I still think that Toyota brought this on themselves. They should have addressed this years a few years back.

Without this specticular wreck and the media coverage, they would probably still be covering it up.

Are some people looking to profit from a big insurance payout.
For one, the car problem needs to be solved.
For two, lawsuits will need to be dealt with.
Looking backwards, I don't remember how Firestone dealt with the lawsuits after admitting they had an SUV tire problem.

Of course they can't reproduce the incident. All part of the cover-up.

I had a similar experience with Honda (no sticking pedals or anything like that) in which I got a lemon Odyssey (van) and I wrote to the company, called, etc and all I got was that it was the dealers fault for not servicing it correctly. I tried to tell the person on the phone that no, it was a poor quality vehicle and it was like talking to a wall. And the dealer got a 'reprimand letter'. BTW the dealer was outstanding in their response/service/care.

And in todays news, Toyota can't duplicate the highly publicized run away Prius of last week with that car.

Gremlins? (not the AMC type)

What is this article trying to say? People die in cars every day...Toyotas, Fords, GM cars, and Chrysler cars...and YES...all of them make defective vehicles that have caused injury and death.

This is a witch hunt since Toyota has surpassed GM and Ford as the top selling car company in America...and a new way for attorneys to make money.

Toyota needs to make a strong response to stop the bleeding, if indeed it isn't already too late.

A strong response would be something akin to Tylenol's no-questions-asked refunds during the Tylenol poisoning scare in the 1980s. that action was widely credited with saving and strengthening Tylenol as a brand.

A strong response -- some kind of refund on generous terms -- would not be cheap, but would salvage Toyota as a brand.

Consumer Reports only reports on what it's members have to say about their own cars. Facts is facts.

Yes, just like Enron and AIG and others. There no real accoutablity in the USA, except for law suit judgments , which are overly inflated in my opinion.

Just not right for Toyota too at first to ignore. US insurance companies and the NHTSA are somewhat at fault here too.

Considering the driving experience & decision making process of the police officer one would think he'd kow to turn off the ignition or put the vehicle in neutral.

There was a guy on tv last week who claimed his Toyota was faulty. They have tested the car and found nothing amiss. Do you think the man set it up? I certainly do!

This is why I suggested for the manufacture to test as much as they can before selling to the public. This could have been avoided, but the rush to make money and out sell the competition out weights the risk.

While I believe that the loss of this patrol officer and his family was due to Toyota's bad design (whether in the floor mat or the software, I don't know), but it does not help the side of those lost loved ones when the most current Prius "victim" is communicating only through his lawyer.

Not to minimize the families losses. (I refuse to ride in a car driven by my 80 year old mother. She continually slams on the brakes, drives to fast and runs through stop signs, can not back up, uses one foot on the brake and the other on the gas AND gets mixed up about it, can't hear and cannot see to drive after dark. Other family members constantly ask her to "babysit" for free, when they could hire a sitter. I'm just waiting for the sheriffs office to call about an accident).
Other members of the family do not believe that Mom has a problem driving, and unfortunately will not admit it.
And the State will not take her drivers license, NOR will they re-test her driving skills, UNTIL she has an accident.
She drives a Chevy Malibu.
